The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck whose job it is to produce hormones that regulate many of the body's essential functions, including metabolism (the conversion of calories from food into energy) . In simple terms, the body takes iodine from certain foods in order to convert it into the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid cells are the only cells in the body that can absorb iodine. In these cells, iodine is combined with the amino acid l-tyrosine to make T4 (thyroxine).
