The colon (large intestine) is the site of the final parts of digestion with function including:
- Absorption of fluids to regulate body hydration levels.
- Processing of waste products from digested food ready for elimination.
It is also the site of the largest concentration of bacteria that form the gut microbiome. Many different species of bacteria reside within the colon and have beneficial functions within the digestive tract and throughout the body.
