Many of us feel we are over worked today and seem to never have enough energy to complete our daily activities. Look on the grocery store or healthfood store shelves and you will see lots of “energy boosters”. Drinks that promise to revitalize us and give us energy simply by drinking enhanced water in a bottle, a can or even by eating an energy bar.
How safe and how effective are these so called miracle elixirs? Are they just a caffeinated drink or is there something actually useful in them? Are there some energy vitamins that can give us a much needed boost in the middle of our busy day? Will caffeine or a cola drink actually help “wake us up” or is something stronger needed?
Understanding energy and what it does for us
Energy has different meanings and uses depending on the person involved. An athlete will have different energy requirements than the office worker just trying to stay awake in the afternoon.
Breaking it down to cell structure we find that our body burns calories just by breathing. Each activity we pursue will burn more calories and this is determined by our metabolism rate. Some people simply have a higher rate of metabolism and burn far more calories than others. If you are one of those who simply look at a piece of chocolate cake and seem to gain five pounds you most likely have a low rate of metabolism, meaning you burn fewer calories when you exercise.
Calories are a measurement of the energy potential in the food we eat and are the fuel our body needs to perform daily tasks, even simply to breathe and exist. While these high energy caffeine sources will give a feeling of high energy quickly, they don’t solve the problem of why we need more energy in the first place.
