Maintaining a balanced amount of potassium is important

Many foods, including some types of fish, all meats, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and legumes are considered to be good sources of potassium. When the human body has an overabundance of potassium it is called hyperkalemia and in cases where there is not enough it may be called hypokalemia. It is vital that we maintain a proper balance of potassium and this depends on how much sodium and magnesium are in our blood.  When there is too much sodium, as is commonly seen in overly salty diets, there will be a need for potassium supplements.  Vomiting, diarrhea, malnutrition, and excessive sweating may also result in a potassium deficiency. Normally, a well balanced diet which includes plenty of fruits and vegetables will give people a sufficient amount of potassium on a daily basis.

Muscle cramps? Stomach problems? Potassium may help

There are many ailments that have a direct link to insufficient amounts of potassium in the body.  Lack of energy, weakness, disturbances of the stomach, muscle cramps, and even an irregular heartbeat may be the result of hypokalemia or low potassium levels.  Some illnesses cause the body to lose too much potassium such as in cases of diarrhea or vomiting. This in turn leaches out too much potassium, creating an imbalance and causing some of the above mentioned problems. Weak bones, particularly in the elderly, may be helped by the addition of a potassium supplement.  High blood pressure is another problem that has been shown through studies that may be a result of low potassium levels.

Take potassium citrate to treat gout and kidney stones

When taken by mouth, potassium citrate is absorbed rapidly, and then excreted in urine as a carbonate. It can be useful in cases where the urine is highly acidic, turning it alkaline and neutralizing the acid content, and additionally works well as an effective treatment for arrhythmia and gout. People who tend to produce kidney stones have been found to have far less problems, even developing far less stones when using a potassium citrate supplement.

Potassium ascorbate is absorbed and retained quite easily

A combination of potassium and vitamin C, potassium ascorbate provides essential amounts with a buffering action that is easy on the stomach. Ascorbic acid is PH neutral and non acidic and has proven valuable as a binder of minerals and helps carry them through out the human body where they are readily absorbed and retained. Potassium ascorbate is capable of delivering a high potency vitamin C as highly bio available potassium in a combination that proves extremely effective and complementary to each other. Bowel problems such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or severe diarrhea can benefit from potassium ascorbate because it assists in returning the body’s salt levels back to normal range.

Potassium supplements come in many forms

Depending on your requirement, the many potassium supplements on the market may include potassium chloride, potassium gloconate, potassium, citrate, potassium acetate, and potassium bicarbonate. These may be available in many forms such as powder, liquid, capsule, tablets, and effervescent tablets. Also found in multivitamin supplements, potassium is readily available to those who wish to add it to their diet.
